Elements to consider when commissioning custom work
Design
Personally, we’re partial to simplicity. Function always comes before form for us, and we especially appreciate furniture that achieves this with an economy of labor and respect for materials.
While we have many years of expertise in building and woodworking, we still consider ourselves to be students of design. We build best from scale drawings, photographs, and real life examples (i.e. replicating an existing table), and can create digital drawings for certain projects if you don't already have specific plans.
Materials
We value quality materials, and do whatever we can to source the best possible options. We can guide you through decisions about which woods – and other materials – are best for given applications, in terms of function and form, as well as help you to choose the most appropriate hardware.
JOINERY
The methods and techniques of connecting wood pieces together have been developed over thousands of years; this is the art of wood joinery.
From Dovetails to Dadoes, Rabbets to Biscuits, Mortise and Tenon to Tongue and Groove, there are numerous ways to join two pieces of wood, and we can help you decide which are most suited for your project.
FINISH
Our preference is for a hand-applied Hardwax-Oil finish. The finish we use is based on natural vegetable oils and waxes, is safe for people, pets, and plants, durable, shows off the wood beautifully, and is easy to re-apply and repair.
